Training Health Service Technicians as Teacher Assistants in an Inpatient Residential Emotional/Behavior Disorder Classroom Setting
Banks, Walter E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Schools have identified that the use of Teacher Assistants often provides needed additional support in the school setting. In a Health Care Facility that provides inpatient psychiatric services, children ages 5-14 are required to engage in school activities. Currently there are no Teacher Assistants trained in the facility. This study focuses on the development of a training module that will train Health Service Technicians to become Teacher Assistants, providing an added level of support in the inpatient school setting. By using the added resources such as the Health Service Technicians, the training process can be developed in a shorter time. The HSTs already provide a direct role relationship with the children during times that they are not in the classroom. By changing attitudes within the ranks, the classroom setting would become a better environment. The training process was conducted in four phases: DVD training Modules, informal interviews pre-training, informal interviews post-training, and observations.
