Making It Real: A Cooperative, Multigrade, 3D Design Project
Shealer, Ron; Shealer, Michelle
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v74 n2 p8-11 Oct 2014
This article describes a cooperative project between eighth graders and first graders called "Going Green in the Neighborhood." The project entailed the first grade students sketching home designs on paper to make a model community, and the eighth grade students taking those drawings and making them into 3D computer models and then printing them out as true 3D models in plastic. After developing lists of questions, along with some brainstorming on how best to communicate for clarity in the designs, the two groups began their project. The authors/teachers, Ron and Michelle Shealer witnessed a transformation as the older students took on the role of teacher or mentor, working diligently with their junior counterparts on various computer programs and tools used during the project and, after a successful completion, both groups provided ideas and feedback for future designs.
