Report from the European Prison Education Association, September 2006
Behan, Cormac
Journal of Correctional Education, v57 n3 p193-194 Sep 2006
This article reports that the 11th European Prison Education Association International Conference will take place in Dublin, Ireland from June 13 to June 17, 2007. The conference, which was titled "Learning for Liberation," will focus on the exploration of what adult education can offer prison/correctional education. This article also presents the three projects that are being undertaken in European correctional education at the moment. These are: (1) BREAKOUT project, which aims to help reduce offending and re-offending through the development of innovative learning approaches, methods and tools; (2) Storybook Dads, which helps offenders maintain contact with family and friends and provides a vehicle for them to engage in creative and educational activities during their term in jail; and (3) The E.P.L.L.A. (Engaging Prisoners in Lifelong Learning Activities) project, which encourages prisoners and young offenders to re-engage with learning in the hope that it will lead them to a continuous cycle of lifelong learning and thus reduce their risk of re-offending.
