Higher Education Enrollment Forecasts. Washington State 1985-87 Biennial Budget.
Washington State Office of Financial Management, Olympia.
College enrollment forecasts for fall 1985 and 1986 and trends during 1979-1984 are presented for Washington State. Enrollment information is provided on the community college and four-year systems, as well as for five four-year institutions. The two forecasting methods are reviewed: an opportunity model, which projects college enrollment participation rates by age and sex; and a student flow model, which projects admission and retention patterns. Consideration is also given to issues related to the declining numbers of the traditional college age group, the relationship between the declining number of college-age persons and admissions standards, and increased competition for recruiting 17- to 22-year olds. Six assumptions for enrollment forecasting by age group and a statement of risks of enrolling above/below forecasted levels are included. Data for the two- and four-year systems and for the individual institutions cover: average annual headcount and full-time equivalents; actual and projected enrollments for freshmen, transfer, and continuing students; and male and female enrollments by age groups. Appendices include data on the variance of actual from budget targets for enrollment by institution. (SW)
