On Safari: Animals and Their Habitats. Grades 2/3. Tapestries for Learning Series.
McDonald, Heather
This thematic unit involves 2nd and 3rd grade students in an in-depth study of wild animals and their habitats. The interdisciplinary unit connects knowledge related to art, language arts, applied mathematics, social studies, and science. Students think about different types of animals from around the world and consider how they are alike and different, what their basic needs are, and what their natural environments are like. Students create realistic three-dimensional models of animal environments, select specific animals, conduct research to learn about their natural habitats, and pool information to create a class Animal Data Table and Safari Tour. Each of 31 lesson activities includes a statement of purpose, a list of needed materials, a time frame, and learning goals. Assessment information is given. A unit overview, preparation information, bibliography, and reproducible student sheets are provided. (MM)
