Effective writing is every bit as important in alumni and development communications as it is in the public affairs shop. A poorly written donor proposal, awkward or grammatically incorrect thank-you letter, and ambiguous, jargon-filled copy have no place in a professional advancement operation. Good communication is especially important for stewardship and donor relations programs. Donors want to know how their gifts are being used. Each stewardship letter or publication they receive is important to their relationship with the institution. But not every development communication is or should be an ask. Donors want to stay informed and feel connected. Having been in higher education advancement for nearly 40 years, the author suggests that simple postcards with a short message about a particular student achievement or campus program can be inexpensive and effective ways to continue the conversation and set the stage for future development success.
