Men of Good Will: The Religious Education Association, J. Elliot Ross, and the National Conference of Jews and Christians
Nolan, Lucinda A.
Religious Education, v104 n5 p509-526 2009
An impetus of the Religious Education Association (REA) toward becoming an actively intercultural and interreligious agency emerged in the third decade of its existence. This article explores this period through an examination of the involvement of the REA members, Father John Elliot Ross and others (1884-1946) in a series of seminars conducted by the National Conference of Jews and Christians. These gatherings sought to foster tolerance and goodwill among Jews, Protestants, and Roman Catholics in the years prior to the intercultural movement of the 1940s and 1950s. The journal, "Religious Education," became the forum for numerous descriptive articles on these seminars and showcased the Association's emerging self-understanding and public image as an interreligious agency.
