Chapter 2. Adolescents' Attitudes toward the Computer
Russian Education and Society, v46 n6 p39-55 Jun 2004
This second chapter focuses on an analysis of the aspects that characterize the typical content of students' attitudes toward the world of computers. In this connection, it attempts to determine what is of the greatest interest to students as they deal with the world of computers, which types of programs they use, and which magazines they read that are devoted to computers. In order to determine some indicators that characterize the computer user's level of competence, the dynamics of change in the content preferences of students in the fields of computer technologies are compared. The data obtained show that dynamic of changes can be traced with respect to four points: (a) interest in computer games; (b) interest in programming; (c) interest in the use of computer networks as a means of communication; and (d) direct interest in the "use of the computer in order to understand its possibilities." Another important indicator that characterizes user's "level" consists of preferences in particular computer programs and students' reading of specialized magazines devoted to computer technology.
