This course guide outlines the objectives and content for a professional continuing education course on the literature of veterinary medicine. Topics covered include: (1) an introduction to veterinary medicine as a discipline, including comparison with other medical sciences, veterinary medicine education, licensure, animal models, veterinary medicine literature, and veterinary medicine libraries and collections; (2) indexes and abstracts, guides to the literature, and other bibliographic tools; (3) the periodical literature; (4) reference materials; (5) core texts in anatomy, histology, physiology, internal medicine, laboratory medicine, radiology, surgery, zoo and wild animal medicine, endocrinology, pathology, parasitology, obstetrics, anesthesiology, immunology, epidemiology, oncology, and pharmacology; (6) federal and state resources; (7) conferences, proceedings, dissertations, and translations; (8) computer searching; (9) instructional media; and (10) professional associations. A list of 15 suggested readings and 25 reference questions with sources for answers are included. (MES)
