School leaders are finding that business as usual is no longer an option. This fastback provides a framework for thinking about the multiple demands of school leadership, suggesting that the different models of leadership can be reconciled by considering them to be complementary strategies. The fastback describes the hierarchical, transformational, and facilitative leadership strategies in detail and concludes that no one approach is superior in every situation; the principal's job demands multidimensional performance. Furthermore, there is little conclusive evidence to link a particular leadership strategy with student performance. The conclusion offers broad guidelines for choosing an appropriate strategy: (1) match the strategy to the situation; (2) balance process and product; (3) use actions for more than one purpose; and (4) develop a balanced style.
