Mesa Public Schools, AZ.
One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide contains thirteen lessons on pedestrian safety for use in kindergarten and grade 1. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the pedestrian environment; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; and Arizona laws governing pedestrians. The lessons cover the following subjects: the safest route between home and school; the pedestrian; traffic; crossing streets, including the use of crosswalks; traffic lights, the meaning of their colors and signs, and how to use them; railroad crossings; driveways; and the role of policemen and crossing guards. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include simulations of pedestrian situations, class discussions, field trips, coloring, and learning songs. (ELG)
