Expanding Teachers' Capacity to Promote Learning through Reading, Writing and Mathematics in All Classes
Southern Regional Education Board (SREB)
To help students meet higher standards, all academic and career/technical teachers need to be willing and prepared to use reading, writing and mathematics as tools for learning across the curriculum. To do so, they must have access to ongoing professional development, literacy and numeracy coaching, shared strategies, and teamwork to make literacy and numeracy a part of every lesson. Technology has been a boon to many teachers as they use computer software and the Internet to involve students actively in putting reading, writing and mathematics concepts to work in completing assignments and projects. This newsletter contains examples of how school leaders and teachers are taking action to build the reading, writing, speaking and mathematical skills that students need in order to graduate from high school and perform successfully in college and careers. [This newsletter of "best practices" in implementing the "High Schools That Work (HSTW)", "Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW)" and "Technology Centers That Work (TCTW)" school improvement models is based on presentations at the 23rd Annual "HSTW" Staff Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2009.]
