Writing centers on college campuses are spaces where students work with tutors individually or in small groups to build the skills to produce better essays, term papers, and other writing assignments. This article describes how high school students can themselves play a role in answering the "yeahbuts" and help create writing centers in their high schools. Though teachers, researchers, and advocates for high school writing centers have offered valuable discussion about students as peer tutors (e.g., Dean; Elchinoff and Kowalski; Farrell; Jeter), little has been written about how students might take part in creating writing centers as lively spaces that support the rich diversity of their literacy activities. Jane Greer and Djana Trofimoff believe that students can be powerful advocates for writing centers in their high schools. Moreover, working to establish a writing center can help students develop crucial reading/writing abilities as well as a powerful sense of agency that will help them succeed in and beyond high school.
