Modularizing Remedial Mathematics
Wong, Aaron
PRIMUS, v23 n3 p257-273 2013
As remedial mathematics education has become an increasingly important topic of conversation in higher education. Mathematics departments have been put under increased pressure to change their programs to increase the student success rate. A number of models have been introduced over the last decade that represent a wide range of new ideas and teaching formats. For both financial and pedagogical reasons, our institution opted for a restructuring of our program through content modularization. This article is an overview of the rationale of the changes, a presentation of the first year's data, and a discussion of planned future enhancements to the program. An Appendix containing some practical details about the implementation of the program is also included. (Contains 3 tables, 3 figures, and 4 footnotes.)
