An Annotated Bibliography of the Literature Dealing with Language Experience in the Primary Classroom.

This 34-item annotated bibliography examines the literature concerning language experience in the following areas: (1) the rationale for incorporating language arts in the primary classroom; (2) whether using language experience aids the child in developing reading strategies; (3) the achievement scores of children using language experience; (4) whether language experience develops oral language skills; (5) whether language experience aids in increasing sight vocabulary; (6) whether self-authored stories increase reading comprehension; and (7) how a child using language experience views him/herself and reading. The items in this bibliography date from 1966 to 1988 and include journal articles and documents in the ERIC database. For the purposes of this bibliography, the terms language experience approach, integrated language arts program, and whole language are interchangeable. Included are a summary of the literature, conclusions, recommendations, and 39 references. (RS)
