Providing Education to Child Care Instructors: Matching Children's Learning Activities to Cognitive Development.
Desjardins, Margaret M.
Child care instructors and their aides at the Good Shepherd Day Care Center, Punta Gorda, Florida, were taught skills needed to develop classroom activities matching the cognitive development of 3- and 4-year-old children. Through a program of in-service activity in child growth and development, instruction was provided to enable teachers to more effectively match learning styles to individual learners. Training also included on-site visits to help set up a stimulating environment. Participants increased their knowledge of child growth and development and their use of learning/interest centers in the classroom setting. Appended to the report are questionnaires used to determine child caregivers' educational levels and instructional practices, to assess caregivers' knowledge of child growth and development, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop series. Also appended are a list of materials recommended for workshops on child growth and development; content outlines of the workshop series; an observation guide for evaluating learning centers; a list guiding caregivers in denoting the values for children of learning/interest center activities; suggested play court patterns; activities promoting motor ability and perceptual-motor development; and reading hints for parents.
