Buethorn, Don
Exceptional Parent, v38 n5 p26-28 May 2008
When a child first receives a diagnosis and a treatment plan that includes recommendations for bracing, the prospect of intensive orthotic intervention can be daunting for the parent. Braces traditionally represent a prominent visual cue that the child has trouble walking. The classic brace seems awkward and hard to get into and out of. It is natural for parents to question the need for bracing, and they deserve an answer. Over years of working with children, parents, and physical therapists, the author has refined his answers to encourage a pragmatic grasp of what bracing helps. In this article, the author provides insights on this challenging issue that might help parents develop a realistic perspective and make their decision to fit their child for leg braces easier to make. He discusses basic approach to bracing which is divided into three parts: (1) best position of function; (2) learn movement by moving; and (3) least amount of support, and offers orthotic solutions for young children.
