Changing Teachers' In-Class Behavior Through A Group Training Program.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that specific in-class behaviors of classroom teachers could be modified by training. Focused on were these four behaviors: (a) positive reinforcement (PR), (b) negative reinforcement (NR), (c) amount of time the teacher talks as a percentage of all talk in class, and (d) encouragement of non-teacher-centered learning (NTCL). Two groups of teachers were rated in their classrooms on these behaviors as well as on a Teacher Attitude Scale. One group received a 10-session training program aimed at increasing PR and NTCL while decreasing NR and percent-of-teacher talk. Both groups were then reobserved in the classroom with the training group showing significant changes in the predicted direction in all but NR. No accompanying attitude changes were noted. Follow-up observation after three months demonstrated that the changes in classroom behavior were generally maintained. (Author)
