Tips for Moving Parents to Secondary School
Constantino, Steven M.
Principal Leadership, v7 n7 p34-39 Mar 2007
The challenges to engaging families in secondary schools can be daunting. Although family engagement in schools improves the academic achievement of students, families of students in secondary schools have fewer, not more, conversations about school, and families and teachers communicate much less frequently than in elementary years. A survey that assessed four domains of family engagement revealed that families are less likely to engage in school as their children age. This article presents the challenges to engaging families in secondary schools, along with practical tips for improving family engagement at the secondary level. The tips and practices presented in this article are just a few of the hundreds of ideas that have been successfully used in secondary schools. Parents and families, regardless of their backgrounds, are the first and best teachers of their children and have a strong intrinsic desire to see their children be successful. To ignore the power of relationships between schools and families is to ensure that the pervasive gaps in student learning will last for yet another generation. (Contains 1 figure.)
