The paper considers the use of high fantasy (literature using preternatural settings, strong characters, teratological situations, and non-rational phenomena to show an alternative approach to reality) with gifted children and youth. Characteristics of high fantasy are considered, including the wonder it evokes, the archetypical elements it relies on, its portrayal of moral issues in conflicts between good and evil, the opportunities it provides for encouraging creativity, the existence of deeper meanings in the story, and the affinity many gifted students come to feel for the genre. Benefits of high fantasy are detailed for gifted students. (CL)
