English Teaching Profile: France.
British Council, London (England). English Language and Literature Div.
This review of the status of English language instruction in France provides an overview of the role of English in the society in general and outlines the status of English in the educational system at the elementary, secondary, higher, and vocational levels. The following topics are covered: instruction in English for special purposes, the characteristics and training of English language instructors, professional associations for English teachers, the type and availability of instructional materials, educational administration and planning in relation to English teaching, English instruction outside the educational system, British, American, and other international support, commercial opportunities related to English instruction, creative writing, language research, and other sources of information. Although English has a privileged position among foreign languages in France and demand for instruction is great, the French language is vigorously defended and preserved. Some advances in attitudes toward alternative or new approaches to English instruction are found, especially some encouraging developments in adult education. (MSE)
