Curating the Web: Building a Google Custom Search Engine for the Arts
Hennesy, Cody; Bowman, John
Computers in Libraries, v28 n5 p14-15, 18-21 May 2008
Google's first foray onto the web made search simple and results relevant. With its Co-op platform, Google has taken another step toward dramatically increasing the relevancy of search results, further adapting the World Wide Web to local needs. Google Custom Search Engine, a tool on the Co-op platform, puts one in control of his or her own search engine. One chooses the sites and specify how he or she wants his or her engine to search. The authors began building their Custom Search Engine (CSE) out of the box. The Co-op platform makes it easy to begin experimenting right away, and users can begin adding sites individually or collaboratively almost immediately. Building a CSE that really meets patrons' needs, however, takes a bit more work. In this article, the authors discuss the process they took at the California College of the Arts (CCA) Libraries in building "Art Search," a search engine that combines search results from art and design websites with Google Image results. The authors look at the two kinds of CSEs, Stored and Linked, as well as some CSE enhancements that are possible with the Google AJAX Search API. Moving from a Stored to Linked CSE, and finally to a CSE with the Search API, increases one's options in terms of customization, how to add sites, and how to display search results.
