The purpose of education has been viewed in a variety of ways and much attention has focused on learning that is validated or certified by certificates, diplomas, degrees, and the like. Studies suggest that the higher one's formal level of education the more desire there is for continued learning. Many adults in the U.S., however, are without the benefit of a four-year college degree. Through a case study approach, this research investigated lifelong learning practices of six Black adults who had earned less than a college degree, yet remained active in their learning throughout their lives. Beliefs about their own self-direction, motivation to learn, and self-efficacy were explored and their relationship in a learning society. Informal learning has a major role in the field of education and adults without higher levels of formal education have indicated that learning is desirable and continuous throughout their life span in many ways. The findings also revealed informal learning was a major contributor to these adults becoming lifelong learners. The implication of this case study is that a learning society is developed and sustained when everyone is not only given opportunities to learn formally but informal learning is valued as well.
