The Impact of Racial Identity and Consciousness Development of African American Male Academic Achievement: Implications for Counseling
Whiteside, Dora
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas Southern University
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of racial identity/consciousness development on the academic achievement of African American male college freshmen. In the late 1900s Black identity models were developed to help African Americans grasp hold of who they were, as they lived in the residues of the peculiar institution of slavery. The developers of these models put forth the notion that at some point in the development of the African American race, Blacks had taken on a White identity in order to survive in America. This Black White identity development occurred simultaneously with a type of Black identity development, meant for internal survival. These models acted as guides for this African American consciousness as it moved, often traumatically, toward an actualized self-identity. This causal comparative study provides research based information concerning the current impact of racial identity/consciousness development on African American male academic achievement. A sample of 189 African American male freshmen, attending one urban and two rural Historically Black Colleges and Universities, located in southeastern and northeastern Texas were surveyed. The results of this study reveal a significant difference in African American male academic achievement related to various states of racial identity/consciousness development and additional psychosocial variables. Counselors can use this information to help their African American clients better understand and resolve stressors found at certain stages of their racial identity/consciousness development. The resolution of these stressors can greatly aid in the overall academic and psychosocial accomplishments of African American males.
