Creative Opportunities to Improve Young Children's Balance, Strength & Stability
Mally, Kristi
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v21 n4 p25-28 Mar-Apr 2008
Strength, balance, and stability are important factors in performing movement skills, but are often overlooked by elementary schools when planning a quality physical education program for young children. These three interrelated structural characteristics are involved in all human movements. Movement is created by continually changing postures in response to specific task demands. Postures change to accommodate or adjust to the demands placed on the center of gravity. As postures are altered, different parts of the body are required to balance, while distributing body weight in ways that afford stability throughout the entire body. This article was written to highlight the importance of incorporating and infusing balance, strength, and stability into young children's physical education experiences, and to offer practical suggestions on how to accomplish this in a child-centered manner.
