The Stock Market Game, an Educator's Guide. Elementary School Edition [Grades 6-8].
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.; Securities Industry Association, New York, NY.
Helping students learn about taking responsibility for the planning and shaping of their personal financial futures is this 13-lesson teaching unit's goal. Each lesson includes performance objectives, materials, motivational activities, development, and enrichment activities. Concepts are taught through worksheets, stories, and games. Students are introduced to the concept of the stock market by learning the three forms of business organizations and the origins of the New York Stock Exchange. Other concepts taught are: (1) shares of stock; (2) the law of supply and demand; and (3) scarcity. Additional lessons focus on: (1) organization of corporations; (2) factors that have an impact on price; (3) reading stock market quotations; and (4) calculating the amount of profit or loss from the purchase of stock. As a concluding activity, the class participates in a stock market simulation. To apply the information developed in these lessons, it is suggested that students be given some additional class time in preparation for playing "The Stock Market Game," developed in Canada and adopted by the Buffalo (New York) State College, Center for Economic Education.
