Teaching Listening: Voices from the Field
Ashcraft, Nikki, Ed.; Tran, Anh, Ed.
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL)
Listening is the most important of the four language skills and is used most often in everyday communication. Teachers need innovative ways to address the particular listening problems emerging in their own contexts. "Teaching Listening: Voices From the Field" shares successful practices employed by teachers at different levels of education around the world. The teachers in this book show how they built listening activities around a corpus of academic speech, a checklist of listening dimensions, a manipulated text, a telephone message on healthcare, a song, a challenging movie, an audiobook, podcasts, TV talk shows, note taking, and audio recordings of key concepts from a course. These classroom practices will greatly enrich teachers' repertoire of tools for listening development in the TESOL discipline. Chapters of this book include: (1) Contemporary Practices in the Teaching of Listening (Nikki Ashcraft and Anh Tran); (2) Designing Listening Tasks: Lessons Learned From Needs Analysis Studies (Joseph Vincent Dias and Keita Kikuchi); (3) Developing a Corpus-Informed Approach for Teaching Academic Listening (Julia Salehzadeh); (4) Designing and Integrating Effective Listening Activities (Michael Stetson); (5) "For English, Press 1": Motivating Learners With Authentic Telephone Recordings (Patricia Long Davis); (6) Using Music to Inspire More Out-of-Class Listening (Carmella Lieske); (7) Embracing the Challenges of Movie and Television Listening (Christopher Stillwell); (8) Reading While Listening to Build Receptive Fluency (Jeff Popko); (9) The Power of Podcasts: A Tool to Improve Listening Skills and Empower Learners (Ashley Hazell Yildirim and Erica Hoffman); (10) Listening, Thinking, and Understanding: Preparing Elementary School Students to Listen and Process in English (Nancy A. Carnevale); (11) Preparing Adolescents for the Academic Listening Demands of Secondary School Classrooms (Nancy Cloud, Kelly Healey, Michael Paul, Deborah Short, and Patricia Winiarski); (12) Focusing (and Ignoring): Note Taking for Learning in a Course on Listening to Lectures (Jim Bame); and (13) Listening on Their Own Terms: Students Creating Engineering Study Aids (Patricia Sackville).
