Single-Sex Schools and Classrooms. The Informed Educator Series
Clarke, Suzanne
Educational Research Service
In October 2006, the U.S. Department of Education introduced the so-called "single-sex regulations," which brought the issue of single-sex education to the forefront of discussion among educators, policymakers, and parents. Anecdotal evidence suggests that single-sex education can have a positive impact on student achievement. However, opponents of the approach contend that the research-based evidence is lacking and inconclusive. This "Informed Educator" explores some of the reasons why single-sex programs might be offered, some of the concerns about the approach, and some points to consider if you are planning a single-sex education program.
