Providing Programs for the Gifted Handicapped.
Maker, C. June
The two-part text focuses on the provision of educational services for gifted handicapped students. Part I provides a discussion and analysis of principles, issues, and problems in the education of the gifted handicapped. Examined are problems of definition and identification, the development of a realistic self concept, and handicaps as motivators toward achievement. Five divisions, each dealing with one area of handicapping conditions (blind and visually impaired, deaf and hearing impaired, learning disabled, physically handicapped, and emotionally handicapped), answer basic questions regarding the need for programs or provisions, evaluation of existing services, and program suggestions and recommendations. Part II contains a listing and descriptions of resources--programs, agencies, people, and publications--noted to be helpful to policy makers, administrators, teachers, and supervisors who are considering the development of programs and services for the gifted handicapped. Programs are described in terms of the following areas: target population--areas of giftedness and handicap being served; administrative and programatic consideration; curriculum and teaching strategies; evaluation and followup on student progress; teacher selection and training; and sources of additional information. Also provided are listings of agencies and organizations serving the gifted handicapped and people who have expertise in some aspect of gifted handicapped education. An annotated bibliography of 54 books and articles is given which includes information such as the author, title, publisher, and publication data; an abstract of the material contained in the publication; the author's opinion of the type of handicapping condition and talent or gift appropriately discussed; and the author's opinion concerning the type of audience which would benefit from reading the material.
