NHLBI Smoking Education Program. Planning Workshop for Professional and Patient Education (Silver Spring, Maryland, January 29-30, 1985). Summary Report.
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Inst. (DHHS/NIH), Bethesda, MD.
The workshop reported in this document focused on professional and patient smoking education. First, high priority clinical opportunities for smoking intervention were identified. Second, topically-oriented small groups met to plan activities in each of the following priority areas: (1) initiation of smoking cessation/maintaining non-smoking during and after pregnancy; (2) intervention with children at high risk; (3) health care providers and institutions as role models; (4) high risk patients; and (5) regular, periodic visits to a physician. The workshop discussions included extensive descriptions of the clinical opportunities, characteristics of the anti-smoking intervention, barriers that exist and how to overcome them, reaching and educating providers to intervene, and identification of organizations which could undertake efforts to increase effective provider intervention. These key themes are summarized: (1) identification of specific resources needed to assist health professionals to intervene more effectively with their smoking patients; (2) identification of key channels for professional and patient education and information dissemination; and (3) identification of the need for opportunities for networking/communication among organizations and individuals actively involved in smoking intervention. Appendices include the small groups' reports and a list of workshop participants. (ABL)
