SLJ's Technology Survey 2006: New Technologies--Like Blogs and Wikis--Are Taking Their Place in the School Media Center
Brewer, Sally; Milam, Peggy
School Library Journal, v52 n6 p46 Jun 2006
This article presents findings from the School Library Journal's 2006 national technology survey that investigated the trend in today's library media centers. As this study demonstrates, technology continues to be a significant aspect of K-12 media centers. Despite restricted funding and schedules stretched to the limit, media specialists have risen to the challenge. Eighty-eight percent of the respondents provide students with authoritative online references, notably subscription databases, and a host of other valuable e-resources, too. Sixty-five percent of media specialists have their own dedicated Web sites, to help reach an increasingly Internet-wired young audience--and to counter the Google effect. Media specialists are also on the cutting edge, utilizing new Web-based technologies to enhance online student collaboration. Approximately 29 percent of the respondents are currently using or plan to use blogs within the next year, and 18 percent indicated similar plans for wikis.
