Quality and Individualization in Wraparound Team Planning. Data Trends #121
Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health
"Data Trends" reports present summaries of research on mental health services for children and adolescents and their families. The article summarized in this "Data Trends" discusses the results of a study designed to examine team composition, team planning, and team members' satisfaction in 26 different wraparound teams serving children with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and their families. The authors discuss the results of their analyses of observational and survey data and selected team member debriefings, collected during or after a total of 72 team meetings. An important contribution of this study is the research-based data on in vivo functioning of wraparound teams. The authors note the need for further research that extends beyond a focus on planning elements, and includes a representative sample of teams before assuming that the findings can be generalized. Nevertheless, the results identify some important steps that agencies can take to support the development of effective wraparound teams, as well as some challenges that need to be addressed. Based on these results, interventions that promote the capacity of teams to engage in higher quality planning are likely to positively influence their success in designing and implementing individualized care. It is also evident that there is a need to develop new ways to positively engage youth in wraparound teams. In addition, the authors make recommendations about systemic, organizational, team, and individual issues relevant to enabling teams to work in a way that is consistent with wraparound principles. For example, facilitation of the involvement of representatives from community organizations in wraparound teams is likely to require changes that address privacy concerns and that increase the flexibility of meeting times and funding.
