American Zoologist, v24 n2 1984
"Science as a Way of Knowing" is a project of the education committee of the American Society of Zoologists and 11 other organizations. The goal of the project is to offer suggestions for making the teaching of biology at the college and university level more effective. Each year the project focuses on an important subfield of biology and: (1) sponsors a symposium on the topic area; (2) develops a film program; (3) publishes an essay with an extensive bibliography; and (4) publishes the symposium proceedings. The proceedings of the 1984 symposium on evolutionary biology are presented in this document. Articles included are: "Science as a Way of Knowing--Evolutionary Biology: Opening Remarks" and "Science as a Way of Knowing--Evolutionary Biology" (John A. Moore); "The Arrogance of Ignorance-Ignoring the Ubiquitous" (William V. Mayer); "The Shame of Science Education" (E. Peter Volpe); "Science as a Way of Knowing-Evolution: The Biology of Whole Organisms" (Marvalee H. Wake); "Science as a Way of Knowing-Molecular Evolution" (Bruce R. Levin); and "Films, Filmstrips, and Videotapes in Evolutionary biology" (Nathan H. Hart). (JN)
