Mirrors for the Classroom: A Guide to Observation Techniques for Teachers and Supervisors.
Mitsakos, Charles L.
This guide is designed to present a variety of techniques that can be used in conducting classroom observations. Observation techniques are clustered under four major teaching/learning variables: time on task, teacher talk, classroom interaction, and organization and management. Techniques are presented with an overview that details the rationale for their use, tips on how to use the techniques during classroom observations, and suggestions on how to analyze the data gathered. In reviewing the nature of the students and objectives, teaching strategies, and proposed materials for a lesson during a preobservation conference, it is recommended that the teacher and supervisor select the observation technique(s) that the supervisor will employ to gather data during the formal classroom observation which will provide a mirror for the teacher.
