Beyond Parental Control and Authoritarian Parenting Style: Understanding Chinese Parenting through the Cultural Notion of Training.
Chao, Ruth K.
Child Development, v65 n4 p1111-19 Aug 1994
Examined the child-rearing practices of immigrant Chinese and European American mothers of preschool children through questionnaires that measured parental control, authoritative-authoritarian parenting style, and the Chinese concept of child training. Chinese mothers scored significantly higher than European American mothers on the training measure, even after other factors were controlled. The results may help explain Chinese school success.
