Disruption and Distinctiveness in Higher Education
Purcell, Wendy
Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education, v18 n1 p3-8 2014
"Disruption"--while an evocative word triggering feelings of anxiety and perhaps even fear--also signals renewal and growth. The Higher Education (HE) sector in England has experienced some profound disruption over the years, and yet has emerged stronger and renewed in many ways. The impact of recent disruptive forces, from fees to the birth of new universities, has echoed across the HE sector both at home and abroad. The HE sector has responded by paying more attention to the student experience, the student voice, and teaching, as this takes a more central role alongside research. Universities are beginning to understand that income is earned by delivering value--and that their role extends beyond their campus borders in helping to drive economic growth and prosperity. The disruption experienced in the UK HE sector has been unprecedented in recent times. So how can HE institutions respond? The author replies "HE institutions need to focus on their purpose and articulate what they are really good at, to adapt, evolve and move forward from their ancient roots to a new and exciting future where they still deliver on their higher purpose--to advance knowledge and transform lives."
