Parental modeling of behavior has long been considered a major socialization process for children. In this piece, the author explores how parenting behavior is passed from one generation to the next, focusing on parenting styles among Jewish and Muslim mothers in Israel. The results indicate that young mothers tend to reproduce their parents' styles, irrespective of their social or religious backgrounds. While culture tends to influence parenting styles, factors like religion, ethnicity, and national origin are found to have little influence on this intergenerational transmission of parenting behavior. Rather, modeling and imitation of parents' behavior had a deeper effect. This article contributes to research on the parenting styles beneficial to children and suggests the need to examine patterns of intergenerational parenting among different ethnic populations and among fathers.
