The "What Would You Say?" (WWYS?) exercise was developed to help students reflect on and improve their message response choices in the moment, as prompted by fictionalized interpersonal scenarios from films. Video clips were chosen to exemplify situations that were identified by students in a pilot study as situations in which they or others "said the right or the wrong thing." Clips were stopped at a chosen point, and students were asked to indicate immediately by computer what they would say if they were Character X. Students were linked into groups via chatrooms, where groups considered the message options offered by individuals, discussed their pros and cons, and voted on the best one. The exercise has been used more than a dozen times across many semesters in interpersonal communication classes, and examples of responses from one introductory course are reported in this article. In all cases, students generated a wide array of message choices and often engaged in lively debates about why one response was preferable to another.
