Remixing traditional and new teaching techniques via literacy centers can restructure middle grades language arts classrooms to promote student movement, autonomy, and creativity. Literacy centers provide a set of individual, developmentally appropriate learning activities that can be updated daily to match current objectives, but do not need to be planned anew. Literacy center templates can be cycled, combined in different ways, and modified for students. Advantages of using literacy centers include differentiation, reteaching, motivation, and technology integration. Using the literacy center framework, the teacher serves as a facilitator who provides differentiated learning opportunities and helps students monitor their own progress.
