Rekindle the Love of Reading
Isero, Mark
Phi Delta Kappan, v95 n7 p61-64 Apr 2014
This author describes a reading project using Kindles that was designed to increase the reading habits of 9th graders. With a selection of 500 titles for classroom usage, students were encouraged to read any book they chose--in addition to those required for their school term. Isero states that, in the past, many of his students would not risk being caught reading a physical book--not in class, and certainly not on the bus home. It is much cooler, and maybe even safer, to break out an iPhone than a book. Though the Kindle is no longer a cutting-edge device, it still gives students enough tech experience to appease leery onlookers. For the struggling reader, the Kindle Classroom Project was successful because it directly met their needs--cutting through the stigma they felt for many years--and giving them another chance to identify as readers. Specifically, since all the Kindles look similar, kids need not disclose what they are reading. A 9th-grader can enjoy a book at the 3rd-grade level without fearing the taunts and condescension of peers and teachers. Collecting Kindles and loaning them out to students changed attitudes and helped students reclaim a love of reading.
