The Multi-Dimensional Demands of Reading in the Disciplines
Lee, Carol D.
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, v58 n1 p9-15 Sep 2014
This commentary addresses the complexities of reading comprehension with an explicit focus on reading in the disciplines. The author proposes reading as entailing multi-dimensional demands of the reader and posing complex challenges for teachers. These challenges are intensified by restrictive conceptions of relevant prior knowledge and experience and inadequate tools - explicit models of reading processes in the disciplines and assessments for middle and high school - to provide the infrastructure needed.
