Responding in Real Time: Creating a Social Media Crisis Simulator for the Classroom
Anderson, Betsy; Swenson, Rebecca; Kinsella, John
Communication Teacher, v28 n2 p85-95 2014
This article describes a realistic online crisis unit, in which students practice: (1) responding to fast-paced information on multiple social media channels; (2) coordinating and making team decisions; and (3) creating effective responses. These skills are required for entry-level positions such as digital specialists and community managers, which include a high degree of public visibility and responsibility. This simulation is grounded in experiential learning pedagogy. Experiential learning involves students in the learning process "through discussion, group work, hands-on participation and applying information outside the classroom" (Wurdinger & Carlson, 2012, p. 2). Experiential learning's powerful combination of concrete experience and reflective observation prepares students for demands of their professions and allows faculty to incorporate varied modes of learning (Cantor, 1997; Kolb, 1984).
