Categorical Effects in the Perception of Faces.
Beale, James M.; Keil, Frank C.
Cognition, v57 n3 p217-39 Dec 1995
Two studies examined whether individual faces are perceived categorically. A linear continuum of "morphed" faces was generated between individual exemplars of familiar faces. Subjects, undergraduate students, discriminated most accurately when face-pairs straddled apparent category boundaries; thus individual faces are perceived categorically. Found high correlation between the familiarity of a face-pair and the magnitude of the categorization effect. (HTH)
