Geography as a subject is surviving quite well in Queensland. It is holding its own in an increasingly crowded curriculum. More importantly, many students of Geography across the state are engaging in interesting and worthwhile Geography courses. They are not only learning some Geography "content", they are learning important life-long skills within a geographical context. In terms of numbers, the number of students completing Senior Geography has not suffered adversely across the state but anecdotally the situation varies and some teachers would tell quite different stories. Of greater concern for some is the apparent lack of skills that the students bring into senior Geography classes. In 1999 the Geography students of Queensland began studying under a new syllabus, a syllabus which had departed considerably from those that had preceded it. The Syllabus Subcommittee, which consisted of classroom teachers and some academics, when developing the syllabus, were very conscious of its timing--as people headed into a new millennium--and of producing a document, and in turn courses in Geography around the state of Queensland, that would continue to engage, challenge, and benefit the students of Queensland. This article outlines the senior Geography syllabus which provides a set of guidelines within which the teachers develop their courses.
