Research from the Schools of Integrity project identified openness, honesty, relationship-building, and constant rigorous reflection as key elements in schools that successfully balance academic rigor with ethical development. To translate these findings into the public school setting, the Institute for Global Ethics spoke to six secondary school leaders--who were recommended on the basis of their solid reputations of integrity--to learn how ethics and values contribute to leadership effectiveness. The leaders offered five key recommendations: (1) lead from one's core values; (2) have the courage to connect; (3) do one's homework; (4) model the outcomes; and (5) lean on others for support. This article discusses the five recommendations for sustaining ethical leadership and presents the Schools of Integrity project.
