It's Time to Move the Academic Freedom Debate along
Cavanaugh, John C.
Presidency, v9 n2 p26 Spr 2006
In this article, the author shares his view on the academic freedom debate. He applauds the conviction of Kermit Hall and David Horowitz that colleges and universities are places that must do everything they can to open students' and the public's minds to all sides of issues. He believes that discussions about academic freedom are essential to reminding people what really matters in intellectual pursuits. Here, the author identifies problems with Horowitz's argument regarding "intellectual diversity" and how Horowitz frames his argument in terms of "professionalism." He contends that intellectual diversity is a concept fundamental to higher education. The general lack of evidence regarding bias Horowitz and others allege, occurs in grading or other matters, as cited in an official study by Florida's Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability. The study argues that it is time to move the academic freedom conversation along. (Contains 2 notes.)
