In a much-discussed series of postings on the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Web site, Michael Gorman, former president of the American Library Association and the recently retired dean of library services at California State University at Fresno, argues that the "often-anarchic world of the Internet" is saturating people's culture with a "tide of credulity and misinformation" that is rapidly eroding traditional "respect for authenticity and expertise in all scholarly, research, and educational endeavors." At the center of this menace are collaborative online services and user-generated sites like Slashdot, Digg, MySpace, Blogger, and YouTube, which, in Gorman's opinion, are ushering in "a world in which everyone is an expert in a world devoid of expertise."
