Using the Socratic Method in Secondary Teaching.
Schoeman, Stephen
NASSP Bulletin, v81 n587 p19-21 Mar 1997
Students are more accustomed to receiving knowledge than to questioning knowledge, challenging underlying assumptions, and seeing inconsistencies and irrelevancies. The Socratic method requires teachers to challenge students' critical thinking abilities by developing questions based on analogies and hypothetical situations. Although the Socratic method seems easier than formal lecturing, teachers need much more advance preparation. (MLH)
