The information for this book was obtained by asking hundreds of adults students, and instructors with experience teaching adult learners, what they felt were the most important things adult students needed to know. Chapter 1, "Getting Started," provides information about what a student needs to know before enrolling in college. It is designed to help the adult learners find the best college to fit their needs. Chapter 2, "Understanding the Definitions and Customs," highlights some of the unique practices, customs, and definitions commonly used in higher education. Chapter 3, "Knowing the Turf, Rules, and Players," suggests ways of thinking and acting in college. Chapter 4, "Reaching Out," outlines the wealth of college services available beyond the classroom. Chapter 5, "Putting First Things First," outlines how to deal with concerns of integrating existing family and friends into the new network of people present in higher education.
