Partnerships: Door to the Future for Community Colleges.
In response to diminishing resources, Kirkwood Community College (KCC), in Iowa, has made efforts to develop partnerships with public and private agencies to provide organizational and financial support. This report reviews the development of partnerships at KCC and highlights specific agreements. The first part reviews the history of partnership development at the college, highlighting enabling legislation, early partnerships, and sample techniques used to develop agreements. This section indicates that, from 1983 to 1993, KCC economic development officers produced $29 million in training contracts with more than 125 private companies. The next part of the report provides brief descriptions of 19 private partnerships maintained by KCC, including efforts related to a computer training services center, a truck driver education program, a business center, career programs and centers, media development and distribution, automotive technology training, agricultural programs, mentoring programs for educationally disadvantaged students, and health services and education. The final part of the report highlights 31 partnerships with public agencies, including agreements related to a vocational individualized training and learning program, municipal infrastructure improvement, high school vocational programs, distance learning training, teacher in-service training for remote instruction, water and wastewater training, environmental education, fire service training, hazardous waste worker safety training, strategic community and economic development planning, university extension, cable television programming, and penal education.
